The Timber series is the result of recent explorations by the artist into aspects of the Canadian identity. Larose uses landscapes to investigate the liveliness of nature during the nightly absence of humans with a playful and almost spiritual aura. Paired with representations of iconic Canadian identity expressed through historical images of logging men that embody mythical manifestations of masculinity. This series acts as the artist’s self-education on Canadian history. The loggers are ghostly historical figures that surface in contemporary investigations of landscape and identity. They are manifestations of the artist’s fascinations with the macho-masculine identity that has defined/captured the imagined strong male figure that survives in rugged and wild landscapes of Canadian hinterlands.
